In the Smartform database, data for Ascot is split between two separately named courses "Ascot" and "Royal_Ascot" with no course_id to bind them, unlike trainers where multiple owner name variants get the same owner_id.  I guess I could look through the data in detail to answer this question.  Was there a name change a while back (e.g. when the enclosures were renamed), or is the split such that the Royal Ascot week long meeting each year is considered to be a different course name ?  If so, are there any other meetings handled this way, or is this the only one ?

The course is indeed the same Ascot course (for the most part - though some races like the 7f furlong straight course as opposed to the round course are used exclusively at Royal Ascot)   The different naming of Royal Ascot is a function of the fact that this is considered a unique meeting and often advertised in newspapers etc. as "Royal Ascot" rather than "Ascot".
